Lillian Bassman

By Lillian Bassman

I am in love with the painter and photographer, Lillian Bassman. Her work is always simple, usually featuring a dark figure or silhouette with a white background. Each image contains the same aesthetic but you can never quite compare one to another.

Purchase of the Day: The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

'The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou' was the purchase of the day :)
And what a bargain at only $10! Wahooo!
Now what drew me to buy this was not only the known fact of it being a good film, but also featuring a brief cameo from the legendary Isabella Blow

I was hoping for a longer appearance as it was only about 10 seconds, but I would say it was worth it. Not the best actress, but I would give her an award for being not only the best cameo appearance I have seen, but also being best dressed in the film. Although the appearance is earlier in the film and not exactly a big appearance, nonetheless she manages to stun any viewer. And the appearance is not a forgettable one as it's Isabella.

Isabella Blow's brief cameo

As it would seem my somewhat review on this film is strongly positive over the cameo of Blow, besides her cameo I still would of purchased it and recommended it as it was a bloody good film. A very cute film at that. If you haven't already seen it go out and rent it, or even better go out and buy it! You won't be disappointed!

Life Soundtrack: Björk - Crystalline & Cosmogony

So we all have either a song or an album that plays over at a certain moment in our lives.
The soundtrack to my life at the moment is Björk's new 2011 instalments. Her two new singles; Crystalline and Cosmogony. Björk is a favourite of mine, she always brings something new to the table when it comes to the sound of her work and the look of her work.
She is never afraid to go outside the norm.

Cosmogony - Single Cover

Her image for the upcoming album this time around is a favourite of mine. The wild ginger mane-like hair sits on the top of her head like a nest. It brings alive any photo or performance. I can't wait for the album coming out in September! Listen to both of her singles below, absolute magic.

Photograph and Quote: No. 5

"I do like to push. Although I can look quite androgynous and transvestite, I’m anti-camp and I’m anti-ball gowns. I never got attacked when I lived in New York, because people were terrified." - Isabella Blow

"I Wish" List: Armani Privé - Spring 2011 & Fall 2011

Armani Privé - Spring 2011

So this year's Armani Privé collections for both Spring and Fall have left me speechless when it has come to headwear. I thought after watching its Spring 2011 collection that the dramatic somewhat futuristic head pieces would come to an end for this year but Armani proved me wrong with his Fall collection.

 Armani Privé - Spring 2011

Armani Privé - Spring 2011

The Fall 2011 Couture collection was inspired by Japanese fashion. So the headwear featured in this collection were quite geisha inspired. Both collections' headpieces were completely different but both compelling and inspiring.

Armani Privé - Couture Fall 2011

I selected these few featured in my post out of the many shown in both collections as my favourites. These are at the top of my ever growing "I Wish"List!

Ever growing love.

Daphne Guinness is one of the most prominent inspirations of mine from my collection of 'alive' inspirations. Part of the reason why I love her so, is she isn't a trend lover. She doesn't go through fads or phases more like the gradual building of who she sees as herself.

"...isn't this just like liquid sky"

Wearing something more then once is never an issue with Daphne. For example, although she wears some of her shoes or parts of outfits way more then once, it becomes apart of her persona, character and the image she is becoming through the use of repetition. Becoming sort of superhuman, Guinness wears clothing to become something. Her view on fashion and clothing isn't based on the price or trend it is just a manner of decorating the body.

And this is one of the biggest reasons why she inspires me, along with her love for costume jewellery:"The thing about jewellery, it doesn't have to be real".
So much about this woman is inspiring, so much behind the outfits. And a lot of meaning and thinking is put behind her work.

Christian Dior: Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2011/2012

Now where do I start.
Christian Dior for many years kept its elegance and finery from the help of mastermind John Galliano. He sort of did what Karl Lagerfeld did when he took over as designer for Chanel, by keeping what was the signature look of the brand and kept its classics but created a new spin and revived it out of a black hole.

Now the loss of Galliano in my opinion has brought a black hole to Dior. The chic has more or less disappeared from its description, now this isn't always a bad thing but the new creative energy replacing this hasn't been well expressed and you could put these down a runway and takeaway the name of 'Christian Dior' and people wouldn't be able to guess who it is. 'Dior' is pretty nonexistent in this collection since Bill Gaytten has taken over.

The collection is pretty disgraceful and a poor effort. I think it has really damaged the brand. The music taste is not of Dior and there isn't any flow from one outfit to the other. A bit of clashing is always acceptable, but this is just a joke. It is nice as a change and the beginning from where Galliano left off. So far it is a mess but I must say that some of the items separately are beautiful but the styling is all wrong. Including the headpieces, hair and makeup. Not Christian Dior at all and a shame that this waisted energy has been put into a haute couture collection.
I really used to look forward to watching Dior's collections.
Now I just don't know what to think. Hopefully the next collection will be an improvement of some kind.

Fingers crossed.

My Wardrobe: Macaroon Friday

Finally the day had arrived. But Macaroons were out of the picture since we never felt hungry for them.
But delicious baguettes of tuna and chicken were, along with a whole day of shopping that drove me and my friend vicki completely knackered we hadn't the energy to get home.

Hope you enjoy my outfit in this being my first post of many outfits of mien to come.

As you can see below my purchase of the day the Deadly Ponies Mr Mohawk Lure, which seems to make any bag of mine looks that little bit better!
